PURPOSE:

Founded in March 2016, Morganton Humanist Alliance (MHA) is a secular support and community action group for those who value compassion, rationality, and critical thinking. The purpose of the Morganton Humanist Alliance is to promote secular humanism, a non-religious ethical life stance rooted in science, rationality, naturalistic philosophy, and humanist ethics. Through supporting a growing, energetic secular community and ardently engaging in community service projects, we encourage a general benevolence within our local communities, humanity as a whole, our environment, and beyond. We aim to ensure critical thinking and the separation of church and state in matters of policy and litigation while protecting and promoting an individual’s right to freedom of conscience as outlined by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. We present a system of humanist ethics that is a rational alternative to those based on non-secular systems and encourage fellowship among thoughtful people in our community.MHA is an official chapter of the American Humanist Association. According to the AHA,

Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without supernaturalism, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity. The lifestance of Humanism—guided by reason, inspired by compassion, and informed by experience—encourages us to live life well and fully. It evolved through the ages and continues to develop through the efforts of thoughtful people who recognize that values and ideals, however carefully wrought, are subject to change as our knowledge and understandings advance.

MISSION:

MHA abides by the Mission of the American Humanist Association

The mission of the American Humanist Association is to advance humanism, an ethical and life-affirming philosophy free of belief in any gods and other supernatural forces. Advocating for equality for nontheists and a society guided by reason, empathy, and our growing knowledge of the world, the AHA promotes a worldview that encourages individuals to live informed and meaningful lives that aspire to the greater good.
